The Best Thing We Ate This Week: Ordering the skirt steak at any ol’ eatery can yield a grab bag of results — a bland, heavily oiled or overcooked beef slab can leave you wishing you ordered something a little more exciting. Event: The game of petanque is as old as France herself. But Americans often can’t understand a game that’s so, how you say, vague. It’s like a drunken game of horseshoes walked into a dive bar and hooked up with a game of shuffleboard — on the beach. In other words, the objet of this French national pastime is to throw balls down a long sand alley in hopes of getting them close to each other.

Gowanus: The “Superfund stigma” has claimed its first victim, as a development company that once envisioned a 500-unit complex along the banks of the fetid Gowanus Canal has officially bailed on its five-year pursuit of the project saying that it can’t wait for the federal government to complete its proposed 10-plus year clean-up.
