Recent events have made me hungry. That
may sound callous, but food is a comfort and as anyone with a
loving mother knows, when prepared with care and served with
tenderness, food can cure almost anything. I won’t go as far
as to say a bowl of soup can mend the heart of a broken city,
but it can help.

It’s autumn in the borough of kings, and
that means it’s time for Brooklyn Eats at the New York Marriott
Brooklyn. The annual tasting event on Oct. 22 promises to be
even more exciting than last year’s, says Ken Adams, president
of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the event.

Mrs. Deap’s day began at dawn when, after
a glass of tea, she rode a moped to the market for vegetables,
fish, squid, chicken and other ingredients she needed for the
day. She cooked for a dozen or more people in a house in Phnom
Penh, Cambodia, that summer day, including myself, a reporter
at The Cambodia Daily.

There was something for everyone Sunday
at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Chili Pepper Fiesta. From face
painting and chili pepper puppet workshops for kids, to karaoke
hosted by Jammin’ 105 for adolescents, to myriad spectator and
interactive performances for all ages, it was a day of learning
and fun, with the spectacular backdrop of the gardens in all
their mid-fall glory.

Two friends, Caesar and Sueshe, exploring
Brooklyn, a city full of so many choices, we find that deciding
where to eat can be overwhelming. Yet we embark on our quest
with high sprits and growling stomachs. Where will we find delicious
food at reasonable prices, a unique atmosphere, attractive decor
and a non-pretentious staff and clientele? Who knows?

Although we’re
familiar with crusades to save disappearing languages and even
disappearing species of animals, one new book calls attention
to "preserving America’s food heritage." Quail Ridge
Press’s new volume, "Best of the Best from New York Cookbook"
has combed 67 of this state’s cookbooks and come up with 400
recipes that will make you proud - all over again - to be a New
Yorker.

Hugh McMahon quite literally carved a name
for himself in the art world, but unlike his knife-wielding colleagues
who ply their trade on marble or wood, McMahon works with pumpkins.

What happens when two bus boys from Long
Island’s Temple Gates of Zion join forces and open a restaurant
in Brooklyn? The answer is Soma, a modern eatery in the heart
of Williamsburg, perfectly suited to the neighborhood’s artists,
or anyone long on style and short on cash.

Thanksgiving is a harvest-time celebration
in which we give thanks for the bounty of the land and share
seasonal foods with the people we love. While there is nothing
in its genesis to exclude vegetarians, Thanksgiving dinner in
many households is a turkey-centric affair that leaves omnivores
stuffed to bursting and vegetarians picking pecans out of the
pie for protein.
