Saturday, May 5: The meaning of Cinco de Mayo, much like the drinks generally served to celebrate it, has been watered down. Historically a celebration of a Mexican victory over the French in 1862, the holiday has become an excuse to get blotto in between St. Patrick’s and Memorial days. As fans of history and margaritas, we find ourselves torn. Today we’ll also find ourselves at Maria’s Mexican Bistro, where 150 types of tequila are available.

Sunday, May 6: The Brooklyn Indie Market has a new home. The collection of local designers selling their clothing, hats, home goods, pet gear and more are setting up underneath the tents at Smith and Union streets, and will be here each weekend until October. We like Liz Shaw’s guitar-shaped messenger bags, perfect for summer trips to Coney Island.

Monday, May 7: “Angela’s Ashes” author Frank McCourt sits down with WNYC’s Leonard Lopate tonight to chat about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a big, famous author who chats with Leonard Lopate. Expect to hear about McCourt’s latest tome, “Teacher Man,” the final installment in his trilogy of memoirs.

Thursday, May 10: Our very own Smartmom hosts the second annual “Brooklyn Blogfest,” where this year’s theme is “The Impact of Brooklyn Blogging.” The best and brightest keyboard jockeys are expected to attend, and speakers will include bloggers from Gowanus Lounge, Brownstoner and more. Hopefully they’ll all change out of their pajamas.

Friday, May 11: For the fifth year in a row, the weekend-long Bklyn Designs festival kicks off New York’s Design Week and brings together the brightest lamp makers and best dressers in the borough. If you’re ready to trade in that vintage Ikea set, or just want to figure out how people sit on those modern chairs, this is the place to be.
