Tillie’s of Brooklyn

Tillie’s is the kind of place that Starbucks wants to be: a community hub where locals go to meet and chat, surf the ’net, or just read the newspaper. According to their menu, the coffee shop is named for Tillie Asnis, who owned a dry cleaner on the premises in the ’40s and ’50s; a photo of this lady holds pride of place at the top center of the chalkboard behind the counter. Typically the place is crowded with young and old patrons, drinking gourmet coffee and nibbling sweets or a sandwich, or just sitting out in front enjoying the passersby. The popularity of the spot, with its stacks of free weeklies and huge community bulletin board, has resulted in the establishment of a popular open mic series, music performances and art exhibits, depending on the season — all listed on the restaurant’s Web site. The salads, quiches, wraps and sandwiches are made fresh daily, while the baked goods are delivered from local bakeries like Two Little Red Hens, Marquet Patisserie and Baked, along with vegan treats by Red Mango and muffins from Blue Skies.

“Free Wi-Fi access with purchase — at least buy a cup of coffee,” says owner Patricia Mulcahy with a laugh. Tillie’s is open daily.
