Brooklyn Heights foodie Jane Ziegelman has combined her passion for food and teaching to create a culinary program designed for the youngest aspiring chefs.

Ziegelman said adults underestimate how much kids are capable of when it comes to the kitchen. Once a week, students arrive at her doorstep, at 170 Hicks St. at Pierrepont Street, for Kids Cook, her program that teaches them about other countries through their cuisine, good nutrition, culinary tools and how to make exotic dishes using ingredients that can be purchased locally.

"They get recipes to use at home," she said, "so when they go home they can make the bread. We encourage them to cook at home and a lot of them do." Each class holds just eight students, and Ziegelman teaches the class with the aid of an assistant. The grand finale of the class is, of course, when they get to eat what they’ve created.

Classes are offered in two sessions: for ages 6 to 9 and ages 10 to 13. Each session is eight weeks and each class is 90 minutes - enough time to see the process through from start to completion, explained Ziegelman. The cost is $235 per session, and reservations are now being accepted for the next session, beginning the second week in January. For more information about Kids Cook, call (718) 797-0029.
