The words of Portugal’s poets, rich musical
collages and the choreography of Vasco Wellenkamp come together
in a performance of "Amaramalia Abandono" on Nov. 11
at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts.
Members of the young Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporaneo
(pictured), founded in 1999 by Wellenkamp, evoke the spirit of
the Portuguese "fado" (traditional, poignant folksong),
recorded by the late vocalist Amalia Rodrigues.
Tickets for "Amaramalia Abandono," which begins at
8 pm, are $15-$30. The performance takes place at Brooklyn College’s
Walt Whitman Theatre, located one block from the junction of
Flatbush and Nostrand avenues in Midwood. For tickets, or more
information, call (718) 951-4500 or visit www.BrooklynCenterOnline.org.
