HAUNTING ’PHANTOM’

The Brooklyn Paper
Those looking for a little Halloween fun that won’t result in a sugar-fueled frenzy and a trip to the dentist, might want to drop by the Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn Heights on Friday for a special screening of the 1925 horror classic, "The Phantom of the Opera."

Thrill-seekers of all ages are invited to wear costumes to the screening, which is part of Music on the Heights’s "Halloween Spectacular" program. (Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening.)

The event begins at 7:30 pm with a presentation of Saint-Saëns’s haunting "Danse Macabre," performed on the organ by Music on the Heights Artistic Director Bruce Oelschlager and interpreted by dance students from the Brooklyn Music School.

Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel and set in 1880s France, Rupert Julian’s still-chilling, black-and-white film version of "The Phantom of the Opera" stars screen icon Lon Chaney as a tormented, disfigured composer who terrorizes the Paris Opera House in hopes of promoting the career of the beautiful young singer with whom he is obsessed. This silent film will be shown in the church’s historic sanctuary to live musical accompaniment by renowned organist and composer, Bernie Anderson, Jr.

Leroux’s novel has inspired several other film adaptations - none considered quite as good as the original - as well as an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that is now the longest-running Broadway show in history.

Music on the Heights presents its "Halloween Spectacular" with "The Phantom of the Opera" on Oct. 27 at 7:30 pm. The performance takes place in the Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims sanctuary (on Orange Street between Hicks and Henry streets in Brooklyn Heights). Tickets are $10 each, and will be available at the door 30-minutes before showtime. For more information, call (718) 403-9546 or visit the Web site, www.plymouthchurch.org.
