“A lot of our designs get mistaken for Scandinavian,” said the fantastically named Tom Monday, owner of the furniture company, Wonk. The truth of the matter, though, is that each piece is crafted right here in Brooklyn.

For the past three years, Wonk’s DUMBO location has sold sleek-but-functional furniture to a discerning, black-turtlenecked crowd comprised mainly of architects and designers. The store has even garnered a bit of fanfare by producing custom pieces for renowned photographer Cindy Sherman.

“That was really huge for us,” Monday said.

What the DUMBO store was lacking, however, was foot traffic. To remedy this, Monday has opened a second store in Williamsburg because, as he succinctly put it, the neighborhood is comprised of “cool people who need cool things.”

According to Monday, the sophistication of designer David Goltl’s aesthetic, combined with his down-to-earth demeanor, makes him a delight to work with. Monday praised his pieces as “functional and interesting,” which we can get behind, but when he said “high quality and affordable,” we had to scratch our heads — if we were to buy one of their $1,000 tables, we might not have anything to eat off of it!
