A Gold Medal Winner from Chile: Millaman, Reserve Zinfandel

del.icio.usThere are times when my work really has some great benefits. This January I was flown to Chile to be a judge in the Wines of Chile Competition. High floor suite in the Sheraton with a view of the Andes, dinner with some of Chile’s top Chefs. We blind tasted over 250 wines, compared our scores and notes, tasted again, and awarded prizes.
Of all the wines tasted, only thirty one were held good enough to receive a Gold Medal. This wine is one of those thirty one. It is one of the best red wines for under $15 that I have tasted in a long, long time. The wine is dark, almost black/ruby in color, with flashes of plum purple at the rim. The bouquet is powerful and quite aromatic, redolent with blueberries, quince, rose petals nectarines, cassis, vanilla and caramel. On the palate, big, full bodied and rich with overlapping flavors of red cherries, raspberries, raisins, dried plums, dark chocolate and cocoa fill the mouth. There is a pitch-perfect balance of moderate alcohol, firm tannins, lively acidity and ripe, rich fruit flavors. I awarded this wine 20 points, a perfect score.
This was my first encounter with Zinfandel from Chile, and I know that it won’t be my last. I think that you’re going to love this wine as much as I do!
