Julia Wolfe began writing “My Beautiful Scream” shortly after 9-11 in response to the “strange existence of living in beauty [yet] having the sensation of a long drawn out internal scream.”
Six years later, on the eve of the New York premiere of the 30-minute “non-concerto,” Wolfe said the piece still captures the intensity and energy of the time.
“It has this intensity to it,” Wolfe told GO Brooklyn of “My Beautiful Scream,” played on April 21 by the renowned Kronos Quartet with jarring, rhythmic interruptions from the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
What the Brooklyn audience can expect to take away is a sense of the composer’s diverse influences, revealing that even though she is classically trained, she is just as much “a child of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Also included in the Philharmonic’s “Kronos + Cosmos” night is a performance of Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” — set to celestial footage from NASA.
“Kronos + Cosmos” will take place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place in Fort Greene) on April 21 at 8 pm. For information, call (718) 488-5700 or visit www.brooklynphilharm....
