Heroic Con Edison workers rescued sheep, goats, llamas and a cow named Aggie at the Prospect Park Zoo during the “Nor’easter of the Century.”
When floodwaters rose in the barn and petting zoo area on Sunday night, city emergency workers summoned the electric company, which deployed a crew that “rushed in and pumped the water to higher ground,” said company spokesman Chris Olert.
Olert, a former tabloid journalist, refused to speculate on how perilously close the animals, including this Cotswald sheep, came to breathing their last.
“We’re not in the husbandry business,” he said, keeping in check his own sensational instincts, “so I’ll refer you to the bovine, ovine and hirsine experts.”
Zoo officials indeed credited Con Ed with saving the sheep from, at the very least, wearing a soggy sweater.
“They’re all fine — thanks to Con Ed,” said Barbara Russo, the zoo’s spokeswoman.
