Mayor Bloomberg will host a fundraiser for term-limited Borough President — and mayoral hopeful — Marty Markowitz in his Upper East Side townhouse next week, The Brooklyn Paper has learned.
The June 20 fundraiser is certain to fuel speculation that the lame-duck Beep is jump-starting his on-again, off-again run for mayor. Markowitz hasn’t declared his intentions, but he’s sitting on a million-dollar warchest that can be used in the 2009 election.
Markowitz’s campaign dashed hopes that Bloomberg, who has been unfailingly praiseworthy to the Brooklyn borough president, was anointing a successor.
“I don’t think it is an endorsement of anything specific that Marty wants to do or will do,” said Mike Weiss, Markowitz’s campaign treasurer. “I think it’s just an offer out of friendship. They’ve gotten along well and seen eye-to-eye on a lot of things.”
