We like the New York Times as much as the next paper — but when the so-called “Paper of Record” published its annual “new restaurant” section earlier this month, it had one glaring error: the section did not include a single restaurant opening in Brooklyn.
Now, we’re not saying that there aren’t exciting, expensive new boites about to open in Manhattan, but you don’t need a degree from Johnson and Wales to know that there’s plenty of exciting, less-expensive food news being made this fall in our fair borough.
In other words, how could the Times have missed these openings?
Dishing out ice cream, coffee and tea, Blue Marble is the first restaurant from best buddies Jenny Dundas and Alexis Miesen and opens on Sept. 21

Old-fashioned wallpaper and chandeliers give plenty of charm to this spot, which will act as an art gallery in addition to serving pastries, and the “Fair Trade” coffee that everyone loves so much.

It might not be opening in time for autumn, but this news was too good to sit on! “We are looking to open a second venture,” Francine Stephens told GO Brooklyn (that’s an exclusive for all you disappointed Times readers out there). “We don’t have a space yet, but plan to open our next project by early summer in northern Brooklyn.” And while her Flatbush Avenue restaurant is a city-wide phenom, Stephens said that the new venture will be going in a different direction. “It’s a different concept,” she said. “Not a restaurant, but a combination of a retail space and a cafe.”
Though it will be named after ancient Mexican pyramids, this Park Slope restaurant plans on serving cuisine with a modern flair. The menu will include traditional Mexican plates and original menu items in addition to an extra-large wine list. It’s slated to open for dinner on Sept. 12, with lunch following in the coming weeks.

The owners of popular South South Slope restaurant, Kitchen Bar, are opening this offshoot in November. They’re hoping that locals will gather around thin-crust pizza and plasma TVs to watch international sports and knock back a few beers. Otherwise, the draw will be the outdoor seating and 16-seat bar.
686 Sixth Ave., at 21st Street in Greenwood Heights. (718) 788-1186.
Opening soon, this Austro-Hungarian restaurant and bar will feature a 2,000-square-foot biergarten — finally sounding the death knell for over-packed Billyburg bars.
113 N. Third St., between Wythe Avenue and Berry Street in Williamsburg. (718) 963-3973
On Sept. 16, French-Japanese fusion comes to Bay Ridge courtesy of the Water Grill.

The perennial favorite Middle Eastern spot is opening a new branch in Prospect Heights some time in the next two weeks. Expect falafel, spinach pie and the famous “pitza,” or just sit back and enjoy smoking a flavored mix at one of the hookahs.
