del.icio.usWe’ve had hip-hop on our stereo for years now, but on Nov. 3, it will be invading our bookshelf.
“The Breaks: Stylin’ and Profilin’ 1982–1990,” a new coffee table book from powerHouse books by famed hip-hop photographer Janette Beckman, digs through her archives to unearth classic shots of that era’s most significant players, from Slick Rick (pictured) and Grandmaster Flash to Tone Loc and the Beastie Boys.
Beckman, whose career began at the dawn of punk when she was shooting the likes of the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Ramones, was poised and ready to take on hip-hop when it first appeared in the early ’80s.
“[Hip-hop] then was integrated with punk and rock simultaneously,” said powerHouse’s Sara Rosen. “That was the culture.”
And that’s exactly what powerHouse will be celebrating through Nov. 11 as photos from the book and its companion piece, “Born in the Bronx,” grace the windows of the publisher’s DUMBO storefront.
