The Brooklyn Bash

The Brooklyn Paper

The Brooklyn Arts Exchange hosted its seventh annual “BAX 10 Arts and Artists in Progress Awards,” honoring 13 individuals who have made significant contributions to the local arts community, on Nov. 1 at the Prospect Park Picnic House.

Over cocktails, GO Brooklyn caught up with BAX members and award winners and asked them to reminisce over the first award they ever received. — Adam Rathe

Hamida Kinge
BAX marketing manager

“The only award I’ve ever won was for the sixth grade spelling bee!”

Julie Betts
BAX education coordinator

“The first award I ever received was a gymnastics medal.”

Nami Yamamoto
Former BAX artist-in-residence

“I got the ‘No Cavities’ award from my dentist in first grade.”

Reg Flowers
2007 award winner

“I won a six-pack of 7-Up in a raffle on a trip to a canning company when I was in second or third grade.”

Marya Warshaw
BAX executive director

“I won a Bessie award for dance and performance in 1998. For seven years I’ve been giving out awards, but I never got one until I started working at BAX.”

Debbie Schwartz
BAX board member

“The first thing I ever won was not really an award but a chicken. It was a cooked chicken, and I won it in a raffle after a cooking class.”

George Hagan
BAX board member

“I was 10 years old, and I got an award for a poster that said ‘Wear White at Night.’ It was a traffic safety poster.”
