‘Money’ shot

for The Brooklyn Paper

Every day, about seven million New Yorkers spend almost $9 million on city subways and buses, but our guess is no one has any idea what happens to all that dough. For the first time, the New York Transit Museum is offering up all the answers in its latest exhibit, “Show Me the Money: From the Turnstile to the Bank.”

Until 2006, “money trains” moved billions of dollars between stations and a secret “money room” — which we now know was located at 370 Jay St.

The Transit Museum show offers the opportunity to peek inside the 50-year-old tradition of money trains. One of the last surviving two-car trains will be on display at the museum, complete with counting tables and collection bins.

A simulated money room gives kids (and adults) a chance to get in a real token booth while photographs and video reveals the last days of the money train.

And if you really want the inside scoop, get it from those in the know. On Nov. 17, Hank Laube, assistant chief officer of Revenue Control, and Chandra Buie, the exhibit’s associate curator, are leading a behind-the-scenes tour that’s free with admission. Now there’s more bang for your buck.

The New York Transit Museum (on the corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street) is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and weekends, from noon to 4 pm. Admission is $5 adults and $3 children. For information, call (718) 694-1600. — Juliana Bunim
