Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival has always been a safe harbor for choreographers with big ideas — and that’s certainly true of Pappa Tarahumara’s dance-theater piece, “Ship in a View,” which opens on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
“New York City has never seen this large-scale work,” BAM Executive Producer Joseph Melillo told GO Brooklyn.
Choreographer Hiroshi Koike incorporates elements of ancient Noh theater — such as the music of the shakuhachi flute and deliberate, slow footwork — into this moody piece about the changing face of his hometown, a fishing village turned industrial city. But Koike also directs his troupe members to sing and perform utterly arresting, contemporary dance.
“It all contributes to that mysterious landscape which he creates with his company,” said Melillo. “You know you are in a different place and culture, and it is beautiful.”
The Brooklyn Academy of Music presents Pappa Tarahumara’s “Ship in a View” Nov. 28, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:30 pm in the opera house (30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place in Fort Greene). Tickets are $20, $30, $35 and $45. For more information, call (718) 636-4100 or visit the Web site www.bam.org. —Â Lisa J. Curtis
