Gift boxing

for The Brooklyn Paper

There’s an easy way to give your loved ones the gift of Brooklyn this year, and it doesn’t involve shipping them a cheesecake from Junior’s.

“City Sampler: Brooklyn,” the brainchild of “Brooklyn Based” editor Nicole Davis and San Francisco-based gift company The Sampler, is a limited edition series of 100 gift boxes that each contain 11 of the borough’s unique exports. Items like pins by Kate Black and soaps from Skinnyskinny are packed inside every box, but additional treats ensure that no two boxes are the same.

Instead of gifts that might appeal to particular people, Davis aimed to choose gifts that were relevant to Brooklyn.

“There are a lot of sustainable goods in the box, and to me, Brooklyn is very green,” she explained. “It’s also a foodie hotspot, but I couldn’t put any perishables in the box, so I used the ‘egg pants’ [pant-shaped holders for boiled eggs by Liz Kinnmark, pictured] to represent that aspect of Brooklyn. And there are onesies for newborns since we all know this is Stroller Central.”

And our favorite part? Some boxes will be packed with — The Brooklyn Paper!

The Sampler, which previously released a box of items from San Francisco, is equally excited to mine Brooklyn’s treasures.

“We were wondering what city to do next,” said Sampler owner Marie Kare. “Nicole couldn’t have had better timing.” And with items made everywhere from Bushwick to Bay Ridge, the boxes offer a true taste of the borough’s diversity.

“The artists aren’t all in Williamsburg,” said Davis, “and I don’t think you can stereotype any neighborhood as more artistic or edgier than another.”

Anyone who receives one of these thoughtfully curated boxes o’ Brooklyn surely won’t mistake them for a trinket from a big-box store.

“City Sampler: Brooklyn” will go on sale on Saturday, Dec. 1 at www.homeofthesampler.com. Each box is $20 plus shipping. For information, visit www.brooklynbased.net.
