Sure, the National Endowment for the Arts may have concluded that American students aren’t reading enough anymore, but students at PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights are bucking the trend.

On Monday, the kids’ voracious reading was celebrated by their principal, Seth Phillips, at a classic grade-school assembly. Students from grades pre-K to fifth read for a total of 250,935 minutes between Oct. 15 and Nov. 14. Ninety-seven students, including Mia DiCannio (pictured), read for 1,000 minutes or more, and received $10 Barnes & Noble gift cards.

Harry Potter books were popular, but at least two of the students confided to a reporter that a portion of their reading consisted of devouring The Brooklyn Paper. Smart kids.
