As stressed-out holiday shoppers mob department stores to find the latest video game system, shoppers looking for a less frantic, more meaningful experience are heading to New York Creates, a craft fair that has taken up residence at the Brooklyn Historical Society.
And while the 30 crafters at the fair don’t hawk mp3 players, New York Creates Program Manager Kathy Malone said, “If you can’t find what you want, you can always make a custom order.”
Artisans like Judith Hooper, whose “kimono boots,” pictured, and ceramics helped make her the “2008 Ebay Entrepreneur of the Year,” make buying handmade gifts an easy choice; everything from jewelry to fiber arts to glass-blown beadwork is available, and different artists are there each day, so the selection is always changing.
The New York Creates Holiday Crafts Fair will take place from noon to 6 pm on Dec. 22 and 23 at the Brooklyn Historical Society (128 Pierrepont St. at Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights). For information, visit www.nycreates.com.
