Montague gets the green light

You don’t need a car to enjoy the green lights on Montague Street.

Workers hung environmentally friendly decorative lights from the branches of more than 20 Montague Street trees on Earth Day, illuminating the Brooklyn Heights thoroughfare without pulling any energy from the grid.

All Car Rent-A-Car

The spherical Japanese-style lanterns — each charged by a small solar panel — dangle over the sidewalk, casting a greenish glow through their paper wrappings.

“These lights really enhance the mood and character of Montague Street,” said Chelsea Maudlin, executive director of the Montague Street Business Improvement District, which sponsored the project. “I want the people who visit Montague Street to be able to look up and say, ‘Wow, this is the kind of urban environment that I really enjoy.’”

True to her claim, neighbors are enjoying it.

“I think they’re attractive,” said Tracy Walsch, manager of Heights Books, which is between Henry and Hicks streets. “They’re not too bright — it’s nice that they’re not trying to turn Montague Street into the Times Square of Brooklyn Heights.”
