Protests shut down Atlantic Ave

More than 250 protestors shut down traffic in one direction on Atlantic Avenue on Wednesday afternoon to protest last month’s not guilty verdict for the three police officers involved in the shooting of Sean Bell.

Councilman Charles Barron (D–Canarsie), a candidate for borough president and a critic of what he calls the NYPD’s excessive force against minorities led the march between Nevins and Bond streets.

“People have to come out and make things happen,” said Tenise Gary. “That’s the only way things are ever going to change.”

Two hundred people were arrested in protests citywide, though the NYPD did not release the Brooklyn arrest numbers.
