School’s out forever

The Brooklyn Paper

The controversial deal to turn the independent Polytechnic University into a part of New York University has been approved by the state, the final arbiter on the merger.

Tuesday’s vote by the Board of Regents allows NYU to purchase Poly, the Downtown Brooklyn institute, and turn it into the engineering school for the expansionist Greenwich Village university.

Dissident alumni and board members of Poly had tried to squelch the deal by alleging conflicts of interest and saying that an arcane, 1970s-era agreement between NYU and the state barred the school from having an engineering wing.

An investigation by state Sen. Kenneth LaValle (R–Long Island) did cite some concerns about how Poly brokered the deal with NYU, but ultimately said there was not sufficient cause to block the merger.

As a result of Tuesday’s vote, both schools will begin a three- to five-year process of bringing Poly fully into the NYU fold. Incoming freshmen at Poly will be able to take some courses at NYU and their diplomas will read “New York University.”
