These 11- and 12-year-old kids from Hopkinton, Mass., just won their Little League championship — and their coach credits the “Can Do” spirit of old Brooklyn Dodgers.
“At the start, we were given Los Angeles Dodger uniforms and hats,” said coach Tom Carey, who lived in Brooklyn Heights in the early 1980s. “But we wanted to teach the kids about the Brooklyn Dodgers, so we got one set of gray uniforms. Once they started wearing them, they went on a tear. We swept all four games of the playoffs.”
Even better than the title was the lesson the kids learned.
“We taught them about Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and about how the team finally beat the Yankees after all those years.”
