There are always plenty of strange things to gawk at in Empire–Fulton Ferry State Park, but beginning Sunday, a collection of 30 new sculptures will be unveiled by the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition.
Titled “Relative Environment,” the show features artwork that uses natural materials. Some blend into their natural setting, and some — like Jeffrey James Mohr and Seth Hoercher’s sculpture, which features seeds native to Brooklyn for the public to take home with them — encourage visitors to interact with nature.
“We’re looking for work that integrates into the natural space and the setting of the park,” said co-curator Tyrome Tripoli. “It’s work that pertains to the environment in some way.
“Part of the problem with humans is that we think we can save the environment, but we’re really just saving ourselves. I think it’s a great theme; every year should have this theme.”
“Relative Environment” is on display July 20 — with an opening reception featuring live music from noon to 6 pm — through Sept. 7 in Empire–Fulton Ferry State Park (enter park at Main and Plymouth streets in DUMBO).
