The last-place Cyclones got a must-win game, thanks to some outstanding pitching and a clutch, two-out double by Matt Smith.
The game was deadlocked until the fifth, when Eric Campbell led off with a single, and promptly scored on Sean Ratliff’s double. Ratliff came in on the Smith two-bagger.
But most important, starter Scott Shaw turned in the team’s best performance of the year, striking out four Lake Monsters in eight innings of four-hit ball, lowering his ERA to 2.38 and evening his record at 2–2.
Closer Steve Clyne got his fourth save of the year with a one, two, three ninth.
