Three Cyclone pitchers combined on a classic one-hitter, blanking the Spinners and moving the Cyclones back into second place, just three games behind the hated Staten Island Yankees.
If starter Chris Schwinden (7 IP, 1 hit, 12 Ks) hadn’t pitched so heroically, the story of this game might have been the Cyclones’ nine men left on base. Repeatedly, the Cyclones put ducks on the pond, but just as often failed to produce.
That said, the Brooks got on the board first, getting a run in the third on a J.R. Voyles groundout. Voyles knocked in another run — also on an out — in the fifth after leadoff hitter Matt Smith’s triple.
In all, the Cyclones had 11 hits.
Reliever Yury Santana returned from temporary arm trouble to pitch a one-two-three eighth (with two strikeouts!) and closer Steve Clyne finished off the gem in similar, lights-out fashion.
