Dog day in Brooklyn Heights

Brooklyn Heights has gone to the dogs — and pet owners of all breeds will have their day now, too.

NYCPet will open on Clark Street later this month — the fifth pet store in the neighborhood to hawk pet supplies, food and those lovable little chew toys.

For NYC Pet, it will be the 26-year-old company’s fifth store in the city, adding to a chain that includes scratching posts in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and two in Park Slope.

With all this pet activity in the neighborhood, it’s no wonder that Mayor Bloomberg chose the Hillside dog run on Columbia Heights this week to announce the city’s new, faster online dog licensing system.

Despite the glut of pet stores — Pet’s Emporium at 105 Montague St., Rowf at 43 Hicks St., Perfect Paws at 102 Hicks St., and the Tailored Pet at 89 Pineapple Walk — Fido and Fifi owners are excited by the newcomer.

“I just need more basic toys,” said Anna Martin, who works next door to the NYCPet site and loves to spoil her dogs, Obie and Puck. “The other stores around here seemed a little pricier. I’m hopeful!”

But there are neighborhood loyalties, and Heights resident John Bulette said no matter what happens, he will always buy his dog food from Sammi El-Rumi at Pet’s Emporium.

“I don’t care if [NYCPet] gives that food away for free — I’m still going to Sammi,” Bulette said, noting that his pit bull-German Shepherd mix, Cybill Shepherd, loves the free treats Sammi gives her.

Cybill Shepherd perked up at the mention of Sammi’s name.

Sammi, meanwhile, who has been in the neighborhood for 18 years, said he has no concern “whatsoever” of the new store’s arrival.

“I say good luck, my dear. I wish them luck,” he said.
