All the world’s a stage, including the Red Hook Marine Terminal. As of Sept. 5, this cargo hub will be the setting for an opera!
The Vertical Player Repertory is utilizing the Brooklyn waterfront for a presentation of “The Tales of Hoffman” by Jacques Oppenbach.
VPR Artistic Director Judith Barnes told GO Brooklyn that “Hoffman” is “an ironic and surreal story of unrequited love. [He] falls in love with a girl — who sings herself to death — and a mechanical doll.”
The production (shown in rehearsal) will make use of the dock’s crates, lumber and even the containers, which according to Barnes, “will be placed behind the audience and used as an acoustic band shell.”
Replete with a full orchestra and incredible view of Governor’s Island, this is a night at the opera that you don’t want to miss.
Vertical Player Repertory presents “The Tales of Hoffman” Sept. 5–21 at the Red Hook Marine Terminal (Pier 9A, 70 Hamilton Ave. at Van Brunt Street in Red Hook). Tickets are $35 and $50. For tickets, call (212) 868-4444. Must provide photo ID to enter terminal. For more information, visit www.vpropera.org.
