Massage sent

The Brooklyn Paper

We work our interns pretty damn hard over here and we certainly don’t pay them in anything except matchless experience — so we were pleased when we heard that Susan Stratton of Sage Spa in Park Slope was offering free massages to “deserving individuals in special need of some personal pampering and care.”

Better still, there’s an essay contest to determine the most “deserving” souls! Our brutalized intern is clearly a shoe-in!

Alas, not everyone shares our definition of the word “deserving.”

“I’m sure your intern is very hard working, but we’re talking about people who have had a real run of bad luck,” said Stratton, who is giving the gratis rubdowns for the second year. “I had two [essay] submissions today — one about a woman who was coming through breast cancer whose partner had just been laid off. And the other essay was about a woman who was a teenage mother and is now getting her college degree just as her marriage is falling apart and her father died. To top it off, she’s now taking care of her nephew, too.”

So in one corner, you have a cancer survivor and a woman who just lost her father. In the other corner, you have our intern.

Hmm.

Well, so much for that free massage, intern. Now, get us some coffee.

To nominate a “deserving” person for a free, hour-long massage at Sage Spa [420 Fifth Ave., between Seventh and Eighth streets in Park Slope, (718) 832 2030], e-mail Susan Stratton at s.stratton@sagebrooklyn.com.
