Our friends at the City Council press office sent us this photo to highlight a new fundraising campaign for the cash-strapped Brooklyn Public Library — but we couldn’t help but highlight something else.

Boy, aren’t the pols on the left having a GREAT time!

Now, kidding aside, the Brooklyn Public Library’s three-month, “Support our Shelves” initiative is about as worthy a cause as any in these tough times.

And the politicians on the left — Councilman Domenic Recchia, Borough President Markowitz and Brooklyn Public Library board chairman Anthony Crowell — all said the right thing last Thursday?

But, guys, if you’re being photographed at an event to champion the library, at least look like you’re having a good time — reading is supposed to be fun, isn’t it?

Damn, even the guy in the painting behind Council Speaker Christine Quinn looks pissed off!

Ha! Nice photo. The photographer should have been at the Bushwick branch that day, though -- they had an extremely well-attended, lively community discussion on the past/present/future of food in Bushwick. Nobody had such a sour face on there, I promise.

I would imagine that kicking off a fund raising campaign for a cash strapped library during these economic times was challenging for all the folks in this picture. Smiling throughout a press event like that would have been inappropriate at best. It wouldn't compromise your journalistic integrity to write a feature on this important initiative instead of goofing on the public servants clearly doing their best to be part of the solution. You ought to try it yourselves sometime.
