Mother’s Day is coming up — look, you need a gift

for The Brooklyn Paper

If your mother is like ours, she loves you dearly, despite your faults. But if she’s like ours, she won’t accept not getting a gift on Mother’s Day. And, really, is that too much to ask (she raised you, you ungrateful cad)? Besides, it’s easy to get Mom (not her real name) something she’ll love, thanks to The Brooklyn Paper’s annual gift guide — this time with an eye towards the recession. You’ll be ready for Sunday, May 10 in style.

Tea and Crumpets
Does your mom prefer Earl Grey or Chamomile? The custom tea sampler at Two For The Pot in Brooklyn Heights allows you to choose whatever tea blends, pots or accessories best fit mom’s tastes. Depending on how much you want to splurge, the samplers run from under $10 to several times that.
Two For The Pot [200 Clinton St., between Atlantic Avenue and State Street, (718) 855-8173].

A Bottle of Bubbly
Show Mom how classy you are by getting her a bottle of quality champagne from Red, White and Bubbly in Park Slope. Owner Darrin Siegfried recommends Ayala Champagne and will feature it as a special on Saturday, May 3. The wine shop will also hold a wine tasting from 2–6 pm on Mother’s Day itself.
Red, White and Bubbly [211 Fifth Ave., between Union and President street, (718) 636-9463].

Eco Mom
The perfect gift for a mom who likes to keep a green home. Pratt alumna Diane Ruengsorn created a line of environmentally and socially responsible kitchenware designs: sleek cutting boards, salt and pepper shakers, and salad bowls all made out of recycled materials.
Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation [200 Willoughby Ave., near Grand Avenue, (718) 636-3690]; and Adobe in Williamsburg [179 Grand St., between Bedford and Driggs avenues, (718) 388-5383].

Crafty Mom
This floral bag is just one of the locally designed items being offered at the Mother’s Day Craft Fair at the Brooklyn Historical Society this Saturday and Sunday.
Brooklyn Historical Society [128 Pierrepont St., at Clinton Street, (718) 222-4111], May 2, 10 am–5 pm; and May 3, noon-4 pm.

Beachy keen
Has your Mom always dreamed of having a beach house to escape to? Bring the beach to her with this recycled sea glass bowl, designed to mimic the movement of the ocean ($36 to $210) at the Brooklyn Museum gift shop.
Brooklyn Museum [200 Eastern Pkwy., at Washington Avenue, (718) 638-5000], closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Reader Feedback

Janeanne from Bushwick says:
Great ideas! I have another sweet, inexpensive suggestion for the bookworm Mommas out there!

BookSwim (http://www.BookSwim.com) is the Netflix of books, rents the latest bestsellers, new releases, and classics with free shipping both ways. Read your books as long as you want — no late fees.

Enter the coupon code “MOTHERSDAY2009” at checkout when you purchase a $40 gift card for mom to rent books through BookSwim, and receive an extra $10 free (making it a full $50!). PLUS everyone will receive a $20 gift certificate to 1-800-Flowers.com as well.

This gift is perfect for last minute shoppers and it’s definitely customizable – Mom can go online right away and add books to her queue and have them quickly shipped over for her enjoyment and entertainment!
