Monster bug sculptures? Made-to-order leather bags? Greeting cards created on an antique wood press while you wait?
It’s all at the bi-weekly Makers Market at American Can Factory in Gowanus.
Don’t call it a “flea” market.” Everyone involved is a curated artist, and all the goods are hand-made. And they’re all excited about what they’re doing — or else.
“If you’re a sourpuss, you’re not allowed in,” said co-curator Angie Velasquez.
Rebecca Brittain makes her bug art by picking insects apart and fashioning their parts into fantastic monsters.
Marc Schreiner makes bags. You tell him what you want — briefcase, handbag, bicycle sack, anything — and he’ll dye, cut, weld, and carve the leather on the spot. (It ain’t cheap, of course — $500–$1,500 — but the bag will last for decades.)
Swayspace makes the greeting cards. You pick out the message, font, and design, and the company will print it out on an old wooden letterpress.
“Honestly, there is no market like it,” said Velasquez. “I’m not just saying that cause I’m the curator.”
Makers Market at The Old American Can Factory (232 Third St. at Third Avenue in Gowanus) every second and fourth Sunday from 11 am-6 pm.
