Cartoonist shines a light on lamps

for The Brooklyn Paper

Our cartoonist Cristian Fleming is not a big fan of the antique lights in Brooklyn Heights.

Reader Feedback

Andrew Porter from Bklyn Heights says:
It was the mid 1960s, and Brooklyn Heights was about to become the first landmarked community. What better way for the city to celebrate the neighborhood but to take out all those ugly old light standards and replace them with the co-called Cobra-headed posts, that shine down on the streets, because cars need to see where they're going, and pedestrians don't.

Fifty years later, and a great wrong is about to be righted. It has nothing to do with the stimulus: this plan has been in the works for years. If Fleming thinks this is a newly minted plan, then I have a bridge he can buy. With his own money.

Dou W from Brooklyn Heights says:
When would be a good time? They look great and will improve the area, which is important in and of itself. Look good, feel good. Also, in a time when worries persist that the state of the economy may un-do some of the gains made in improving neighborhoods around the city this small act will be a large improvement. We should still strive for all kinds of improvements whenever we have the chance.
