It’s playoff time and the big guns are going for the Cyclones.
Yes, the team loped into the playoffs as the wild card after losing six of their last 10 games as the McNamara Division-winning Staten Island Yankees ended the season with a remarkable 14-for-16 string.
But Cyclone manager Pedro Lopez has unveiled a starting rotation that shows he’s intent on playing deep into September.
Starting tonight’s opener against the league-leading Mahoning Valley Scrappers is none other than New York-Penn League wins leader, Mark Cohoon, who not only had nine “W’s” this season, but was sixth in the league with his 2.15 earned run average.
Cohoon walked only 20 batters in 92 innings this season.
On Wednesday in Ohio, Brandon Moore will start for the Clones.
Moore’s 2.09 ERA was good enough for fifth best in the league this year. And he was in the top 10 in wins, too. He also walked few batters — a key to pitching in the minors.
If the best-of-three series gets to a third game, the Cyclones’ number two starter, Collin McHugh will get the ball. McHugh had eight wins against just two losses all season, and his 2.76 ERA was also one of the best in the league. He struck out 79 hitters in 75 innings pitched.
The even better news? Rehabbing Met star Carlos Beltran, who hit all of .167 during his five games as a Cyclone is intending to be far away from Keyspan Park on Tuesday night.
“Well, that’s something the Mets will decide,” Beltran said on Saturday night, after one of his three Cyclone hits actually won a game in the bottom of the ninth.
“I told Omar [Minaya, the Met general manager] that I’m ready to go back with the boys.”
