Fishermen lie — but how much?

for The Brooklyn Paper

Fishermen are notorious liars. So on the eve of next week’s inaugural Brooklyn Fishing Derby award ceremony, we asked fishing folk about their best catch and their best fish tale.

— Stephen Brown

Mike Bruno, 26, cinematographer Biggest fish: A 20-inch trout. Biggest fish he said he caught: A 35-inch trout that I said I caught when I was kid even though my dad caught it. Then I probably inflated it by six-inches.

Maria Haddad, 22, graphic designer Biggest fish caught: A measly 10-inch striped bass. Biggest she ever said she caught: A deadly mutant crab with nine legs.

Ben Sargent, 32, co-founder of the Brooklyn Urban Anglers Club Biggest fish caught: A bluefish over 22-inches off of Cape Cod. Biggest fish he said he caught: I’m good about not exaggerating. It comes back to get you. It’s bad karma.

Michael Louie 32, printer Biggest fish caught: A six-pound dolphin-fish. Biggest fish he said he caught: I caught a really big piece of wood covered in seaweed — that was an adventure. I could have lied about that one.
