Not so ‘Brief’! St. Ann’s Warehouse extends hit show

for The Brooklyn Paper

One of the most successful shows in the history of St. Ann’s Warehouse has been extended.

“Brief Encounter,” the modern mashup of David Lean’s 1945 film of the same name and Noel Coward’s play, “Still Life,” has added 16 performances to its schedule, extending the production through Jan. 17.

“The show is so beautiful, and the response has been so joyful that we’re keeping it here for two weeks longer than planned,” said St. Ann’s Artistic Director Susan Feldman. “We know people are busy with the holidays; so, we want to give as many people the chance to see ‘Brief Encounter’ as we can.”

The play, a knockout combination of whimsy and romance, propelled the show through successful runs in London and San Francisco before it landed in December in DUMBO.

Directed by “self-proclaimed love addict” Emma Rice, this mix of screen, stage and song gives “Brief Encounter” a new twist on old romance, weaving a tale of love and infidelity that shines through its innovative presentation.

The show is an all-encompassing, multi-media live experience that starts from the moment you enter the theater. Fully costumed old-time movie ushers wait on hand as live jazz music plays in the lobby. The production features the film screening as a backdrop to its dancing and singing performers.

“It’s rare to find a show with an edge, universal appeal, and outstanding stagecraft,” added Feldman.

“Brief Encounter” at St. Ann’s Warehouse [38 Water St. between Main and Dock streets in DUMBO, (718) 254-8779].
