Fire officials recanted their statement last week that a fire razed Montague Wine & Spirits — it turns out that the March 11 blaze started in an adjacent Laundromat.
The fire quickly spread to the wine shop — which is between Pierrepont Place and Hicks Street — at about 8:15 am. Fire officials said the shop sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.
About 60 firefighters responded to find the wine shop ablaze, but the fire was put out by about 9 am. There were no injuries, but the laundromat is considered a total loss at this point.
But there’s still hope for the wine shop, which promises to open soon via a sign on the boarded-up front:
“Due to the fire, Montague Wines will be closed for several days,” it reads. “Sorry for the inconvenience.”
Fire officials said the fire was electrical in nature, but they’re still hashing out the details. But on the day of the blaze, one local had quipped, “Try the smoked fish at Theresa’s — it’s certainly fresh.”
