Piquant has great food — and a rare beer on tap

The Brooklyn Paper

It’s one thing to have great Southwestern food. It’s quite another to serve it with a Negro Modelo on tap.

The good news is that Piquant, which opened last month on Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights, has both.

Owner Mike Issa has completely transformed his Mitchell’s restaurant from an unsuccessful deli/high-end hybrid into a gorgeous, sleek eatery with a lounge feel in the front bar and Tex-Mex stylings in the dining room.

Chef David Sharp is cranking out some outstanding dishes, including crab quesadillas, beef flautas and fish tacos for appetizers, and achiote-marinated grilled tuna and slow-roasted baby back ribs with ancho-molasses sauce as entrees.

Even without Negra Modelo on tap, Piquant would be a welcome newcomer to the dour strip between Sixth and St. Marks avenues. But being the only bar in Brooklyn that is serving this delectable elixir out of fresh kegs makes Piquant a must-visit destination.

What’s the big deal about Negra Modelo? If you have to ask, you’ve spent your underprivileged drinking life consuming the inferior, watery version served in bottles around town. On tap, Negra Modelo combines the perfect combination of crisp drinkability and dark beer body — biting through a spicy sauce, yet also creating a creamy smoothness in the mouth.

Did we mention that pints of this wondrous mood enhancer are only $3 during happy hour?

We’ll see you there.

Piquant [259 Flatbush Ave. between Sixth and St. Marks avenues in Prospect Heights, (718) 484-4114]. Happy hour, 4-8 pm nightly. Closed Monday.
