Aren’t they preaching to the converted?
Students at PS 29 were served fine food for thought yesterday when celebrity chef and author Rachael Ray stopped by the Cobble Hill school to ham up the merits of eating a healthy diet.
Ray, the big banana behind her Yum-o! organization, was joined by Mayor Bloomberg, plus other city officials and agricultural gurus, who came to announce a menu of nutritionally charged programs for school children. There’s even one that helps schools build their own garden, or connect them to an existing one.
Aptly, Ray and Hizzoner regurgitated their message next to PS 29’s blooming veggie garden on Henry Street, between Kane and Baltic streets, which teachers have been using for years to enhance their science and nature classes.
The green oasis, made up of four four-by-24-foot beds sowed by the students, staff and parents, has already made its sweet self known to the school community — its produce is incorporated into the lunch menus, giving fresh meaning to the phrase, “home-grown.”
In other words, we’re way ahead of you, Rachael!
