Celebrate Brooklyn isn’t just a summer-long music festival.
On June 17, Park Slope funnyman Eugene Mirman, a regular on the much loved “Flight of the Conchords” and the man behind Brooklyn’s annual Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, headlines a night that features his “pretty good friends” John Hodgman, Michael Showalter, Kumail Nanjiani, Janeane Garofalo and Jerry Minor.
As Mirman has consistently shown during gigs at the Bell House or his weekly stand-up show, “Tearing the Veil of Maya” at Union Hall, the absurdist comic could get on stage without any prepared material and riff hilariously for hours.
The prepared stuff is worth hearing, though. One of his latest bits, “God is a 12-Year-Old Boy with Aspergers,” comes to the conclusion that religion, with all its rules and rituals, is “not a leap of faith, it’s high-functioning autism.”
Some of his best bits involve the use of a laptop and video. Here’s hoping that the bandshell is equipped with a projector.
