No joke here as Polish vet group sells Greenpoint HQ for big bucks

The former headquarters of the Polish Legion of American Veterans has been sold for $2.3 million to a developer who intends to transform it into 18 condominium units.

The charming two-story red brick building on Leonard Street was built in the 1930s as an elementary school, known as PS 59. In 1947, the Polish veterans group bought it and converted it to its headquarters, but the building — one of the oldest school buildings in North Brooklyn — was not altered much.

Now, state-of-the-art-condos will replace the banquet hall in a space where Greenpoint’s school children and later Polish veterans and their families once gathered.

The historic building could have been torn down, but will instead be adaptively reused — a win-win for the neighborhood, said commercial real estate broker Joseph Nicholas.

“It’s a very unusual building,” added Nicholas. “It would have been a shame to rip it down. Others who intended to buy it had intentions to rip it down.”

Nichols said that prospective buyers have already expressed an interest in living in the building, even though the condos haven’t been built yet.

The building itself will receive a gut renovation and another story of residential units will be added on top.

The front of the building and two lawns on each side will be preserved, but the building’s wings will come down adding more outdoor space.

Aaron, you're incorrect re the building's age. This building was constructed 1886-88. It was first used as P.S. 59, Branch School of P.S. 34, in 1889. All you had to do was look it up in "The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Almanac-1889". BTW, P.S. 59 was called "The Horace Greeley School.

These conversions are the 21st Century equivalent of tenements. The developers want to squeeze as many apartments as possible to maximize profits. It doesn't matter that the units will probably start at 500 G's. It is what it is.
