If you’re hoping to hear Rep. Ed Towns discuss the issues affecting your community this primary season, keep hoping.

The 27-year incumbent has refused to take part in a debate with challenger Kevin Powell sponsored by this paper.

For close to two weeks, Towns (D–Fort Greene) didn’t respond to our repeated invitations to come to our Downtown offices to speak directly to his constituents and outline his current congressional platform, even after we offered his camp a choice of 12 timeslots over four dates.

When we finally demanded to know if he was going to attend, campaign spokesman Hank Sheinkopf said Towns wasn’t.

This is the second time Towns has turned down a debate with us. He also shot down our request for one in 2008. Powell, who has been trying to unseat Towns since 2006, and received 33 percent of the vote against the incumbent in 2008, did come to our offices for an interview with our editorial staff.

He was willing to return this year, even with all of the skeletons in his closet: Besides owing more than $600,000 in taxes — despite a yearly salary that puts him in the top 97 percent of American households — the MTV reality-TV star turned author and public speaker freely admits he has a history of violence toward women.

But it doesn’t look like any of this will be aired in a public forum with Towns — no debates between the two men have been scheduled.

Powell claimed his supporters have contacted Towns’s office repeatedly, asking for a debate, but were cursed at and hung up on.

“We believe in democracy here in Brooklyn and we believe a healthy aspect of democracy is public debate,” Powell said. “I want to discuss how we can make Brooklyn better for all of us. I also want to hear Congressman Towns and his plans, because that’s how democracy works. You listen to one another, you work together, you find a way to make Brooklyn better.”

Towns’s campaign had not responded to Powell’s debate allegation by late Sunday.

Primary Day is Sept. 14.

Sick and Tired from Clinton Hill says:
Joey sorry to hear you feel like a failure.

My concern and I am sure the 599,999 other folks in the congressional district is that we would REALLY like to hear what Mr. Towns plans to do for the people in his community not the corporations, developers and your clique.

You serve out our pleasure it is just a shame you are a democrat because as you well know the folks in this community vote by party affiliation and name recognition even though Lords knows you have done nothing to deserve it. So Mr. Politician when can we hear what your plan is?

Are you afraid to address the people it is NOT about Mr. Powell its about US. I guess it will be business as usual should you god forbid you get re-elected.

David M. Quintana from Ozone Park says:
This guy, Kevin Powell is a sham. He has NO history or past, as to where he comes from...

What was the outcome of the alleged problems at Rutgers University - the alleged two incidents with females and knives?

Was he arrested and or forced to leave the school?

Were there any agreements made with the female students and Rutgers?

There was a similar alleged type of event later on., the alleged assault on a reporter.

Were there any arrests in these cases?

It's alleged that he's held s sham/scam fund raiser and refused to refund money.

This man is a specter, there has been NO info on his personal life a to his marital status, children, girlfriend, boyfriend, et al..

He's a phantom in the communities he seeks to represent.

His voting record is spotty over the years according to Board of Election records.

He has NO associations with any Brooklyn community organizations – NO NAACP, NO YMCA, NO Brooklyn Democratic Club, NO Civic Associations, et al.

There is NOthing he can truthfully say that he participated in or sponsored in East New York, BedStuy, Brownsville, Ft. Greene, Canarsie, etc..

He came out the woodwork. Rootless in community and only connected with City Councilman Barron and A.T. Mitchell.

Man-up organization which Powell is affiliated with is basically a Charles Barron organization funded with a little bit of money from the City Council.

For any woman or women's organization to support a woman abuser is to believe that a leopard can change it's spots. Kevin Powell is an out-and-out unrepentant misogynist and abuser.

There are so many questions Powell still has to answer before he can be legitimately taken seriously as a candidate for the US House of Representatives against Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and incumbent Rep Ed Towns, in the 10th Congressional District.

I did not know that the 10th congressional district covered Ozone Park.

I for one believe that people do change and mature. And the definition of madness is doing the same thing again and again expecting a different result. For 27 years we have been committing the same crime by allowing a career politician to warm a seat while the community goes to hell in a hand basket.

Mr. Towns may not have a record of abusing women but he sure has a record of abusing the community as he drives all the way back to Hyland Pak

This wmanizing, abusive a-hole has no connection to this district whatsoever, he hasn't done jack to give me any indication that he even knows what a public servant is suppose to do and we must send him to Washington to represent us...Come on Son!!! Ed Towns isn't a saint, but i just assume vote his old azz back in than to have that kevin Powell clown represent me and my family. tell his azz to pay his taxes so we can get some garbage cans on my block!!!

David Quinina

I have seen your postings before, you always repeat the same gibberish or its the same Ed Town affiliate copying and pasting.

Kevin Powell has answered all the charges against him, If you don't like the answer that is fine but stop acting like he hasn't responded or that he is hiding something.

Secondly since you know so much about Powell why don't you not also tell us about Ed Towns getting caught taking bribes, his trying to funnel money to a non existent org and his obvious overall laziness and barely average intelligence .
