Borough cancer patients can get relief from trekking to Manhattan for chemotherapy, thanks to a new outpatient treatment facility in Boerum Hill — complete with a serene indoor garden, no wait time and cool furniture.
Medical workers joined industry experts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Brooklyn Infusion Center on Monday, to celebrate the center, which boasts 12 treatment rooms, comes with parking and promises to provide leading-edge chemotherapy services to Sloan-Kettering patients, more than 15 percent of whom live here, according to the hospital.
Special features include a novel chemotherapy chair with a touch-screen interactive system that allows patients to call a nurse, get some work or shopping done on the Internet, or make videophone calls with friends and family, plus control their own lighting and heating.
“Our goal is to find different ways to enhance each patient’s experience while demonstrating how patient care can be streamlined at no expense for patients and hospitals,” said Wendy Perchick, the hospital’s chief of strategic planning and innovation.
Being in Brooklyn always means getting the community involved, and a homey touch will be provided by Brooklyn-based artists, who will incorporate patients’ stories for seasonal exhibits in the center’s gallery space.
