Oh, Canada! Here’s a mountie scandal for you

As phone scams go, at least this one had a bit of international flair.

A thief identifying himself as “Constable Karl Moore from the Canadian Police Department” called a Henry Street woman at around 10 am on Feb. 5 and told her that her grandson had gotten into trouble with the law during a trip north of the border.

“Constable Moore” then told the woman that the crimes resulted in $1,714 in fines — but that her grandson could be released as soon as she paid the fee.

She immediately wired the money via Western Union — but then started thinking about the call a bit more.

That’s when she finally called her daughter to inquire about the grandson.

“He’s in school — he’s not in Canada!” the boy’s mother said, putting a punctuation mark on the mountie’s scam.
