Gay couples will be able to get married just like straight couples in the eyes of the law, thanks to the state legislature and Gov. Cuomo.
The new law goes into effect on July 24.
Marriage has been taboo for homosexuals for so long that it’s likely that many gay couples haven’t even bothered to think about the Big Day. For this reason, we now offer this handy checklist — our “Big Gay Wedding” primer, if you will.
• First, submit your marriage license application online at the Office of the City Clerk website, which you can do before July 24.
• Next, you and your spouse must appear in person at the Office of the City Clerk at 360 Adams St. to finish the application.
• Both spouses — remember, there’s no “bride” and “groom” anymore! — must sign an affidavit promising that the name, address, date of birth, and other info is accurate.
• Pay up! Marriage licenses cost $35, payable by credit card or money order.
• Like getting a gun, you must wait a full 24 hours before holding your marriage ceremony.
• In the event that things don’t work out, divorce lawyers will be happy for your business.
