Eight is enough!
The 76th Precinct welcomed an octet of new cops last week — a low number that speaks to the precinct’s overall safety, its top cop said.
Higher crime areas typically receive more cops. For example, 50 young officers were sent to the 70th Precinct in Flatbush this year.
“We tell [the new cops] that there may be lower crime, but there are definitely issues here that need to be addressed,” said Capt. John Lewis, the precinct’s commanding officer.
Lewis said the cops would be a visible presence throughout the precinct, which includes Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, and the Columbia Street Waterfront District.
“They’re out there,” Lewis said.
The cops have all been on the job two years and arrive from commands in Crown Heights, Flatbush and Brownsville, all higher crime areas than the 76th Precinct, which is considered one of the safest in the city.
But that doesn’t mean the newbies will be slouching.
“Our performance will speak for itself,” vowed Officer Juan Flores, who lives in Midwood.
