Monte’s — Brooklyn’s oldest Italian eatery — celebrates 1st birthday

Monte’s has been a household name in Brooklyn for more than a century, but its first birthday party — yes, you read that right — was a celebration for the ages.

The famous Italian joint on Carroll Street opened its doors in 1906 and won over foodies with its Venetian fare, but the former speakeasy and Rat Pack hangout lost its luster in the aughts and closed in 2008 before a change of ownership breathed new life into the legendary restaurant.

To celebrate their first anniversary in the updated eatery — which boasts a new look, an imported an Italian oven, the same old-time-y bar, and a menu that features plenty of classics as well as some new dishes such as wood-fired pizzas — the owners invited the neighborhood over last Sunday for free food and cheap beer.

“We are hoping to generate a place where all walks of life will feel comfortable and enjoy,” co-owner Tina Esposito said.

Monte’s served up 100 pounds of sausages, 300 hamburgers, 400 hotdogs, and even cooked up a whole 60-pound pig — and gave it all away for free to loyal customers and first-timers.

Dominic, get a grip. You're not a gangster. Say hello to your know the ones that wait 2 hours for food.

How about you spend a little money on a good manager ? He or she will get the waitstaff and maybe people will have a good experience.

The change starts with you Dominic, take a look at successful restaurant owners and act on it.

Monte's was one of the most if not the most overated place in nyc for years - crappy pizzaria food and it is no better now (i am going back well over 30 years) - overated like the ramones (what s crap act they were.

Wow. I just read the article and was totally not expecting the previous comments, which I really disagree with. I was sorry to miss the celebration, as my wife and I have been going to the new place since it opened. We even went for Valentine's Day this year (one of the worst times to eat at a restaurant, in my opinion) & had an unexpectedly great time... friendly, unhurried & with well prepared food at non inflated prices. At any rate, we really like the place and think that it's a great (re)addition to the neighborhood. Yes, it has it's rough edges (that will probably work out over time), but that's true of almost all new family run businesses and I wish them many years of success. As folks who eat out very often both here in Bklyn, as well as throughout the city (even in the outer borough of Manhattan), I don't think we are unrealistic in our expectations & this place is just fine by us.
