St. Anselm’s Church in Bay Ridge hit with graffiti

Wanted! $1,250 Reward offered if you catch church vandal

The Brooklyn Paper

That’s not the sign of the cross!

A graffiti vandal painted a large letter “X” on two statues outside St. Anselm’s Church on the corner of 82nd Street and Fourth Avenue last week, but cops have faith they’ll catch the culprit, who was caught on video in the act, and who now has a price on his head.

State Sen. Marty Golden, who is a member of the flock at St. Anselm’s, is offering the $1,000 in return for information leading to the capture of the criminal, who’s dirty work was discovered last Friday.

“I can tell you that we will not stand for such acts of religious intolerance in our community,” said Golden. “We must bring this individual to justice.”

Church members heading to morning mass on May 31 noticed the marking on the side of the crucifix in front of the house of worship — and discovered a similar desecration on the neck of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church’s prayer garden along 82nd Street, an area paved with cobblestones dedicated to deceased loved ones.

Church officials said the event was a shock to the faithful, many of who are elderly, and wondered why someone would do such a thing.

“Those are sacred images to people of faith, and it’s very upsetting to parishioners,” said Monsignor John Maloney, the church’s pastor. “Is it some kind of message, is it just a cowardly act, or the act of a foolish kid, I don’t know?”

The priest contacted police, who came and reviewed the church’s security tapes. The videos show a figure first drawing on the image of Christ, and then on the statue of Mary. Police have taken the taken the tapes for further analysis.

Golden’s aide and fellow parishioner John Quaglione — who is challenging incumbent Councilman Vincent Gentile (D–Bay Ridge) this fall — is putting up an additional $250 reward.

At press time, police were not treating the defiling as a bias crime.

But it is not the first time a Catholic establishment in Bay Ridge has been targeted by vandals. Last March someone knocked over a statue of the Virgin Mary and beheaded the likeness of a lamb at Visitation Monastery on Ridge Boulevard.

Is this the act of a Saint Andrew cult?

labj from Bay Ridge says:
Why is this not a bias crime? Is it because it is a Catholic Church? I am disgusted by this. My deceased family members have a stone over there. I hope the person(s) responsible for this desecration are caught and held responsible. Yes this is a bias crime and should be on the front pages of the NY Daily News, Post, etc.

Table the paranoia, willya? It's bias if done for with the intent of expressing hatred or intimidating those in some religious-racial-ethnic-etc. group.
It's NOT bias (but it's still vandalism) if a dumb---t kid or drunken bozo did it out of mindless dumb---tness or drunken bozohood, simply because he-she found something taggable.

I think if I took a red sharpie and drew an X on your throat, you'd probably "get" that I mean that I'm gonna slit your neck, Logician. Or maybe not. Some people are _that_ stupid. Clearly these folks are not. I hope they find the culprit and set the penguins on him...

So the X on the jesus figure's lower left hip means what? 'i'm gonna break your femur'?

Hey Logician, There is no logic to your argument. There was an act of vandalism on Ocean Parkway where numerous cars were set on fire and the hateful swastika was drawn on some. It was in the news for days and Dov Hikind (without Purim black face) held a march with Sharpton to deplore a bias fueled crime. After a lenghthy investigation it was deemed there was no bias in this act of arson on these cars. Logician get the difference between an act of vandalism on a car and the desecration of religious statues on Church grounds? Clearly an act of hatred against Catholics.

logician from b ridge says:
No, it's not "CLEARLY an act of hatred against Catholics."
June 4, 2013, 11:10 pm
logician from b ridge says:
To clarify: For this to qualify as a hate crime, the perp would have to intentionally select the target "in whole or in substantial part because of a belief or perception regarding" (among other categories) religion or religious practice.

Until the perp is in custody, you-we have no idea whether the statues were intentionally selected for anti-Catholic reasons or whether some idiot lowlife just wanted to wreck something.

This isn't as blatant as -- say -- attempting to destroy a house of worship, or carefully targeting and torching mezuzahs in 11 separate apartment doorways, or tagging statues or religious property with flagrantly hateful slogans or symbols. In those cases the intent is pretty obvious.

It could go either way -- but we will not know until we know.

Frankie from Dyker Heights says:
"In those cases the intent is pretty obvious." Bingo ! If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck ! It is as "blatant" as the examples that you presented, so I believe there must be some underlying factor for you to play F. Lee Bailey and try to poo poo this outrageous act of religious hatred as the act of just some drunken teenage miscreants. So, "It could go either way-- but we will not know until we know". Really? I don't know who "we " is , so just speak for your myopic self !
June 5, 2013, 9:06 am
logician from b ridge says:
Frankie, the only underlying factor is-are the specifics of the hate-crimes law (which you should read and try to understand - but I doubt that you will).
And "we" means all of us.
There's no "bingo!" until all the facts are in.

ty from pps says:
Frankie,
Someone defacing a couple of statues is "as obvious" as spraypanting swastikas on cars in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood?!

(As the article states, the paint was on the side of the crucifix... so this person isn't very consistent with his "hate crime" -- perhaps the crucifix was just practice? Like when you spot check a new cleaning product in an inconspicuous place...)
June 5, 2013, 9:44 am
logician from b ridge says:
Not just swastikas, Ty -- but also "KKK" and "F*** the Jews."
It looked like hate targeting, but nypd determined that it wasn't and suspected an insurance scam instead.

Frankie from Dyker Heights says:
logician, I am well versed in the Penal Law of the State of New York .So, are you Sgt Friday or Johnny Cochran ? If the glove don't fit, you must acquit ! I guess you were quite pleased with the outcome of that trial. Lady Justice was denied by scheister lawyers that I am sure you hold in high regard.Oh! The Sophistry! OJ fared quite differently at his Civil Trial where the standard of proof is based on the preponderance of evidence .This forum is not a criminal proceeding , but a civil discourse and based upon the nature of this criminal act it "CLEARLY" is biased and hate driven based on the preponderance of evidence." If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck,it's a duck ! Do "We" get it ?

Frankie from Dyker Heights says:
Gonna wait at Home ? Your Fruit Loops(or maybe you prefer koo koo for CoCo Puffs) are gonna get soggy ! At least they are healthier for you than TY from pps huffing that cleaning product in an inconspicuous place and alleging a St Andrews cult perpetrated this hateful act of vandalism.

ty from pps says:
Frankie,
Do you even understand my original JOKE about the St Andrew's cult?

Disgusting act of vandalism? Sure. Hateful? We'll see.

Not everything can be a hate crime. Not everything should be escalated immediately from 1 to 10... there's also 2 through 9.

I think it was an interlopping hipster from North Brooklyn trying his artistic appeal as he once did by drawing a kiZZ star on a virgin mary in Williamsburg.
Drawing an X on virgin mary doesnt constitute a hate crime. SMH
June 5, 2013, 1:32 pm
Frankie from Dyker Heights says:
ty, sorry, that was a JOKE? I guess I'm just not sophisticated enough to understand your highbrow sense of humor.Agreed that not everything is a hate crime, but it seems that there is selective prosecution when it involves members of different ethnic backgrounds who become involved in altercations with each other and that 2 becomes a 10 for political expediency, and votes when the wrong ethnicity comes out on top. Political correctness ad nauseum. There is no gray area here,or 0-100 acceleration . This was not an altercation where andrenaline pumps and epithets are used out of anger and fear and then used to trump up the charges. No, this was a hate fueled act of vandalism.MANPOSEUR,you're a really funny guy too! I am sure that vandalizing the statue of the Virgin Mary wouldn't constitute a hate crime to you since you don't even have the respect to refer to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the uppercase, you know, like a Proper Name. Graffiti vandalism and " drawing" are the same to you? Yea, you're a poser alright!
June 5, 2013, 4:15 pm
ty from pps says:
Ya see Frankie... YOU would interpret an idiot giving a Mary statue Kiss make-up as a hate crime. Why? Because you are deeply offended as a Catholic that *anyone* would dare dishonor the B.V.M. (And of course, everyone is both aware of Mary's importance and shares the same level of conviction)

Guess what? Hate crimes are a messy thing and the biggest component is INTENT and MOTIVATION.

Setting aside your Catholic rage for a second... You know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this graffiti was intended as a hate crime? And not, say, just graffiti on a statue of a human figure?
June 5, 2013, 4:36 pm
ty from pps says:
Oh, and yes, Frankie. That was a JOKE. The graffiti "artist" obviously drew a cross of St Andrew.

logician from b ridge says:
"The graffiti "artist" obviously drew a cross of St Andrew."

So CLEARLY is a hateful Scotsman.
;)
June 5, 2013, 5:22 pm
Frankie from Dyker Heights says:
tygician,a hateful scotsman could be a person of interest in this vandalism as a anti-Catholic hate crime considering their past history. It certainly is not a matter of Catholic rage,as I am a long time non-practicing Catholic and have issues with the Church leadership. So, rage is not the issue, but the cavalier attitude and obvious disdain for Catholics that you could possibly construe a red X across the throat of a statue of the Blessed Virgin as a St Andrew's Cross or a Kiss makeup drawing tells me that you could not be held culpable for any untoward behavior because you clearly could use the affirmative defense of mental disease or defect. The culprit obviously" intended" to vandalize the religious statues and did so. Does anyone believe that culprit acted recklessly or negligently? So, now we have intent motivated by anti-religious behavior. Gotta hand it to you, real funny guys, getting together for a Kiss play date ?

old tinme brooklyn from slope says:
Anti- Catholicism is as America as apple pie - most if not all of the 13 colonies forbade/restricted Catholic worship. St Peter's off Broadway was supposed to be on Broadway but the powers that be would not allow a Catholic Church on a main drag. let us not forget John Jay who lobbied for loyalty oaths .
