G-whiz! Small train improvements on the way

The Brooklyn Local deserves a makeover, but the MTA says it doesn’t have the money to do it.

On Monday morning, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a report that includes a battery of changes it plans to make to appease long-suffering G train riders, but most won’t take effect until the cash-strapped agency finds the dollars needed to get the job done.

The most important improvement — a 25-percent increase in service between 3 pm and 9 pm that would help alleviate overcrowded trains — would require an additional $700,000, funding state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D–Brooklyn Heights) says he’ll help the agency obtain.

In the meantime, the MTA says it will help riders out a little bit with these improvements that will come within the next year:

• Create a more streamlined timetable that will better interact with the F line schedule, allowing G trains to be better spaced at all 20 stations.

• Pick a standardized place on the platform where the four-car train will stop every time, so riders don’t have to guess where to wait for the four-car trains.

• Rearrange benches and trash cans on the platforms so that they are in the area where trains will stop.

• Add public announcement systems to the 12 G train stations that currently do not have them.

• Make changes to the way it ushers riders into the trains at the ends of the line at Church Avenue in Kensington and Court Square in Queens.

• Add additional signage to point riders in the right directions.

Those changes were cheered by Squadron, who asked the agency for a full review of Brooklyn’s beloved Toonerville Trolley in hopes of improving service.

“Now G train riders will be en route to much-needed relief that may one day lead to the G meaning great,” said Squadron. “These recommendations will allow the G train to keep pace with skyrocketing growth in Brooklyn.”

Members of Riders Alliance, a straphangers activist group, attended the Monday meeting to show their support for the changes. The group has spent the past several months rallying and meeting with the MTA on how to improve service.

“The trains come very infrequently, which is compounded by the fact that they are irregular,” said Alexis Saba, who lives of the Clinton-Washington stop in Crown Heights. “I am happy for these changes, because it means I will not longer have to leave my house half an hour early.”

Why all the interest in a train no one even rides? The only good thing about the G is it removes a handful of people in some of the BK F-train stops for the morning commute. And, you can take it to Williamsburg the one time a year when you accidently go there forgetting how much suck that place is, or when you want to see that it REALLY DOES have THAT many hipsters.

What's the point of adding markers to tell people where the trains stops, if you're not going to address the bigger issue of adding more cars? You have the entire platform & the G-train only utilizes 1/2 of it since the budget cuts years back reduced it to 4 cars.

Any improvement is good but how about the obvious? It's still 1/2 of a normal train. MTA will drag their feet on these changes but I feel the extended the train should have been a given.

P.S. For those who utilize the Broadway station tell your station manager it's time for renovation. Green & brown goo on your local train station walls & pipes just screams toxicity for your lungs/respiratory system.

I would like to ask something to the Riders Alliance. Who is actually going to be footing the majority of the bill for all of this? The answer is probably going to be us registered motorists living in downstate NY especially with the tolls going up even more. Personally, I do feel that fare hikes should be done especially if those that use them the most want the best ride. In reality, the riders pay almost nothing for their fares while it's being heavily subsidized. Before anyone talks about how major European cities are doing so much better, it's actually because they did raise their fares let alone have fare zones rather than a flat fare. Also, I don't want to hear that you can't afford this when you can already afford to pay for where you are living right now, so this would be chump change.

Tal, your point is reasonable. Let the rider pay for the ride. When we flush out the welfare cases and the mook freeloaders who've been jumping turnstyles and dragging down the system for decades, then we'll have a more equitable tax burden throughout the state and an inner city of yuppies and hipsters who can actually pay their own way through life.

That said, however, we also have to tilt the resources somewhat toward building and expaning public transportation, so as to ease up on auto emissions in the metro area.

If the fare beaters were stopped long ago, there wouldn't even be a need to raise the fares in the first place. However, so many are doing this on the subways and city buses, and most of them are just about never caught. I don't like how mass transit is being perversely funded especially with those living outside the city paying for the bulk of it. The idea of the tolls was to pay off whatever they were on and be removed to have the taxes for infrastructure be funding it. In other words, the so-called free bridges aren't exactly free as the anti-car crowd believes they are. Honestly, those that have the tolls are already high enough, and just recently, there was someone trying to escape the toll plaza and the VNB without paying. The only way I would actually support toll hikes is if they only go for helping with whatever they are on, not anywhere else. At least the fare hikes go to helping mass transit, because it's not like they are fixing any highways, bridges, and tunnels that have been in bad shape. Overall, I am not against transit improvement or expansion, just the way it's being funded. As for that picture, where it reads "Rider's Win", it should also say "Motorists Lose", because those such as myself will be provided the majority of the funding. In reality, the fares collect are really small potatoes to the MTA, while the tolls provide a lot more for them. On a side note, knock it off, ty, because the MTA is a state agency, not a city agency, and my taxes do go to them, so I get just as much a say on what they do as you do.

Ty, this was said at a hearing involving the fare hikes last year over at Baruch College by one of those who spoke there. I know that because I was there myself when you probably weren't. At least I stand up to the fight and don't hide behind my computer unlike you. BTW, I was applauded there for what I had to say about how I felt about what the MTA was planning, and they even agreed with me on how the tolls feel like double tipping. In the end, you are the stupid one ty, especially when you act like nothing but a cyberbully or even a coward.

Ty, I feel that you are the scared one here, which is why you probably didn't attend any of those MTA hearings. I dare you to speak to that lady that mentioned it, and she will tell you that you are dead wrong. BTW, the fare beaters aren't just the poor and lower classes, they are just about every level of income, because she saw even CEOs doing it as well, so this has nothing to do with class or even race in that issue. Still, I feel that riders should provide the bulk of the funding especially if they are the ones that are really using it.

Ty, even with those cameras, the fare beaters are still getting away with it. If the NYCTA actually does their job in stopping them, then there wouldn't be a problem. Just because they see it, doesn't mean that they are going to act on it. Unless those cameras help identify them, no action will be taken, which is why they are able to get away with it.
